What is atonement (kaffara) for breaking Fast of Ramadan deliberately?
The Kaffarah of intentional breaking of Ramadan fasting: It is a sin if there is not a valid excuse for the intentional breaking of a definite (compulsory) fard fasting. The Prophet (PBUH) said: “The expiation for spoiling a fast in Ramadan is like the expiation for zihar” (Ibnu'l- Humam, Fathu'l-Qadir, II, 70).
Therefore, a person who breaks his fast intentionally is obliged to fast 60 days successively. This is fard (compulsory) for that person. Besides, he/she has to perform qadha for the spoiled fast. There is no Kaffarah apart from the compulsory (fard) fasting such as nafila (supererogatory) fasting because breaking a fast during the month of Ramadan constitutes a sin. And it is not evaluated in the same way as Nafila (supererogatory) fasting. (Marghinani, ibid, I, 125).
What is expiation (kaffara) for breaking Optional Fast (Nafl roza)?
A person who breaks a nafl (optional meritorious) fast for any reason is that it is compulsory upon the self to do a make up for that given broken fast. Shari’a does not make it obligatory upon us to keep nafl fast. It is something we bind upon ourselves to gain closeness to Allah (subhanahuwata’ala). Thus, because you made something necessary upon yourself that was not necessary to begin with and later felt obligated to break it, you are now to do a make up for the broken nafl fast.
What amount of fidyah to be paid by one who is unable to fast for the reason of too old age?
The elderly or sick person for whom there is no hope of recovery should feed one poor person for each day, giving half a saa’ of wheat, dates, rice or similar local staple. That is equivalent to approximately one and a half kilograms. See Fatwa Ramadan, p. 545.
He may give it all in one go at the end of the month, 45 kilograms of rice, for example, or if he makes some food and invites poor people to come and eat, that is good, because that is what Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) did.
If you gave the fidyah in the form of cash following the view of a scholar who issued a fatwa to that effect, then you do not have to give it again. But if you did that yourselves, then you have to give it again, in order to be on the safe side and in order to honor your father, may Allah have mercy on hi and forgive him.
